Foods to Eat When You’re Sick

Let’s face it; no one likes to be sick – and even more so, who wants to cook while they’re sick? When you are sick, you need food for your body to gain energy and fight off the illness. But some foods are better than others at doing that. First of all, always stay hydrated while you’re sick. Even if you cannot eat, drink as much fluids as you can to stay hydrated.

Eat Ginger

Ginger is a great thing to drink while you are sick. Think of all of the times you have had ginger ale and how refreshed you feel. Ginger is a natural anti-nausea herb, but it can also help you feel better in general. Avoid the sugary ginger sodas though and go for a ginger tea instead.

Eat Soup

It’s true, soup is actually good for you when you’re sick. The warmth helps relax your chest while you are suffering from congestion and any garlic or onion in the broth offers antimicrobial properties. Avoid dairy or cream-based soups if you can. These can actually make coughing worse and upset your stomach.

Try Some Honey

Honey is sweet, succulent and great for a sore throat. It has natural antimicrobial properties and can actually help kill of bacteria in the back of your throat. Also, just one teaspoon in tea will give you a warming sensation and soothe your throat. If you mix it with ginger, you can create the ultimate anti-sore throat remedy.

Eat More Spicy Foods

If you are congested, spicy foods can actually help you break up the sinuses and Eustachian tube. Super spicy foods won’t affect you as much when you are sick, because you’re too congested to taste. But also the body reacts to that burning sensation, which loosens up any mucous and helps you breathe easier. Avoid spicy foods if you have an upset stomach though.

Give Ginseng a Try

Ginseng is found in energy drinks as well as cold remedies – and for good reason. It can help give you more energy and even reduce how long you are sick. If you can, mix its natural powder form with your soup or in a tea instead of using an energy drink – you’ll get better results.

Use Cloves

Cloves, more specifically clove oil, is used to help reduce pin. If you have a sore throat, use clove oil in a warm tea or chew on whole leaves to help soothe the pain.
